BACKGROUND STORY

Aisha Hassan Awes has been suffering from severe acute malnutrition with complications. Her family has taken her to the Horsed Health Center, where the DMO team is implementing a nutrition program to treat her. Aisha was referred to the OTP site at Horsed Health Center. The nutrition team screened her and gave her the required nutrition. Her weight was only 6.4 kg, and her MUAC was only 10.5 cm.

The little girl was given care, and she has been followed up until she recovered from SAM. She was managed through ready-to-use therapeutic foods (RUTF), treatments of common infections through routine medicines, and individualized nutrition counseling for the caregiver during the course of the treatments. With the extra efforts by the DMO nutrition team during the follow-ups and good cooperation from the caregiver, Soon after, Aisha gained weight, reaching 9.0 kg, and her MUAC was 12.5 cm after 72 days in the program. She was fully recovered from malnutrition both physically, emotionally, and psychologically as she became alert, gained weight, and passed 90% of the plumpy-nut test. In addition to that, the OTP nurse asked about the about the situation of her child, and the mother said the child gets better, sleeps well, plays, and is restless.

Aisha’s parents appreciated the kind of services offered to her child, which was management of her child both nutritionally and medically, and also informed her, the IYCF counselor and nutrition nurse, about the proper feeding practices, which are very important and improving well day in and day out, which is good feedback about the impact of the DMO project. Finally, they thanked the DMO frontline staff for humanitarian support and urgent assistance provided by its teams in such affected areas. DMO, funded by UNICEF, contributes to saving the lives of so many children like Aisha across Baidoa.
