IMAM: for Nutrition Specially outpatient therapeutic care Program me (OTP)

OTP component consists on a network of centres where patients can be visit on a weekly basis as close as possible to their residences.

OTPs admit and follow up patients that present with severe acute malnutrition and no complications, and those that complete treatment in SC and continue recovery at home with OTP follow up.

OTPs are usually attached to a Health Centre or Health Post. They can admit children with SAM daily, but follow up activities are organised in specific days on weekly basis. Treatment consists on i) Systematic Medical Treatment, ii) Ready to Use Therapeutic Food (e.g Plumpy’nut®) , and iii) Specific treatment according to patient’s status. Flow of patients:

 

Adapt the flow of patients to the situation in your clinic. This is an example of patient and activity flow in a OTP. Each of them is explained in more detail in this section:

Waiting area:

 

Ensure that there is shaded area for the mothers and children to wait.

Look for the most critical children, and give them priority for admission. Look in particular for those with potential complications like dehydration, those not alert or with high fever.

Preparation of sugar water: 100 gr. sugar per 1 litre of water

       Measurement area:

Measure weight and height and check the Weight-for-height Z-score using the new tables.

Check for oedema on both feet and legs.

Measure MUAC (children > = 65 cm and < = 110 cm in height only).

Registration and admission:

 

Admit the child according to the admission criteria, give the wrist-band.

Fill in the Register book

Fill in the OTP chart for new admissions. Take the card from the file for the follow ups !

 

Give explanations concerning the functioning of the OTP to the caregiver
